Long long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted 12 animals.

He said: “The first 12 animals to come will be in the zodiac.”

他说：“最先来的 12 只动物，会进入十二生肖。”

The cat and the mouse were good friends.

猫和老鼠是好朋友。

They decided to go together the next day.

The mouse said to the cat: “I will wake you up.”

老鼠对猫说：“我会叫醒你的。”

But the next morning, the mouse forgot.

但是第二天早上，老鼠忘记了。

He went to see the Jade Emperor alone.

他一个人去见玉皇大帝了。

On the way, he met the ox.

在路上，他遇到了牛。

The ox walked very fast.

牛走得非常快。

The mouse jumped on the ox’s back.

老鼠跳到了牛的背上。

When they arrived, the mouse jumped down first.

So the mouse was the first.

The ox was the second.

Then came the tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

They became the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.

Later, the cat woke up.

He ran to see the Jade Emperor, but it was too late.

He was very angry with the mouse.
