Waiting for rabbits
In the past, there was a farmer in the State of Song.
In the field he cultivated, there stood a large tree.
One day, while working in the field, he suddenly saw a hare running past in front of him.
The hare bumped into the large tree, broke its neck, and died under the tree.
Without any effort, the farmer happily enjoyed a meal of hare meat.
He was very pleased and thought how wonderful it would be if every day were like this.
Thereupon, he no longer tilled his land. Instead, he stayed by that tree, waiting for another hare to bump into it and die.
He waited and watched day after day. His field lay barren, yet he never caught a second hare.
The villagers laughed at him for mistaking the accidental for the inevitable.
